Dolly Parton was a true American icon whose career spanned many decades and was extremely influential in American music. She did great work in the 1980s and today we take a peak back and celebrate some of those career highs.
In 1980 the movie 9 to 5 came out, and the title song, oh you know it, everybody knows it, I don’t care how young you are, became one of her biggest crossover hits, reaching number 1 on the billboard hot 100 and awarding her two grammys in 1982. Seriously, if you don’t know this song, then it’s off to bed without your supper! Workin nine to five what a way to make a livin!

She wore a pink lace gown at the movie premiere which was truly stunning, in classic Dolly style.
In 1983 she achieved another massive #1 hit, the duet Islands In the Stream with Kenny rogers. The duo became immediately iconic and is now one of the most famous collaborations in music history.
In 1986 she reopened silver dollar city under the new name Dollywood in Pigeon Forge Tennessee. She loved giving back to the community and this was another way to do so by creating jobs and renewed vitality in the area.
In 1989 the movie Steel Magnolias came out and Dolly brought her unmistakable 80s glamour and over the top personality to the screen as quick witted beauty shop owner, Truvy Jones.
Now, think of how dolly’s image was tailor-made for the 1980s, even before the decade arrived. She had enormous platinum blonde hair with massive volume and luxurious curls, very defined and extravagant makeup and jewelry, rhinestones, sequins, shapely silhouettes, glitter, heels, metallic sheens, and the brightest of colors. It’s almost as though Dolly and the 1980s were a match made in heaven.
